La Liga

La Liga, officially known as La Liga Santander for sponsorship reasons, is the top professional football division of the Spanish football league system. Administered by the National Professional Football League (LFP), it is contested by 20 teams, with the three lowest-placed teams relegated to the Segunda Division and replaced by the top two teams in that division plus the winner of a play-off.

La Liga, which means "The League" in Spanish, was founded in 1929. Since its inception, it has been dominated by two of the world's most famous and successful clubs, Real Madrid and Barcelona. Real Madrid has won the title a record 34 times, while Barcelona has claimed the championship 26 times.
