Major League Soccer (MLS) is the premier professional football league in the United States and Canada. Founded in 1993 as part of the United States' bid to host the 1994 FIFA World Cup, the first season took place in 1996 with ten teams. Today, the league comprises 27 teams—24 in the U.S. and 3 in Canada—and plans to expand to 30 teams by the 2023 season.

The MLS operates under a single-entity structure, where teams and player contracts are centrally owned by the league. Each team has an investor-operator that is a shareholder in the league. The investor-operators control their respective teams' marketing, ticket sales, and player rosters.

The league follows a format similar to other American sports leagues with a regular season and playoffs. The regular season runs from late February to October, with each team playing 34 games. The postseason, known as the MLS Cup Playoffs, culminates in the championship game, the MLS Cup. The team with the best regular-season record is awarded the Supporters' Shield.

MLS has seen significant growth since its inception, both in terms of team expansion and overall popularity. The league has also made strides in improving the level of play, attracting notable international players towards the end of their careers, such as David Beckham, Thierry Henry, and Zlatan Ibrahimović, as well as promising young talents.

The league's commitment to developing domestic talent is evident in its youth development system. Each MLS team is required to maintain a youth academy free of cost to the players. This initiative has produced numerous players who have gone on to play for the U.S. and Canadian national teams.

MLS's influence extends beyond the football field. The league has been instrumental in building soccer-specific stadiums throughout North America, enhancing the fan experience. It has also made significant efforts to engage with its fan base through community outreach programs and digital initiatives.

Despite facing early financial struggles and skepticism from the traditional American sports audience, MLS has established itself as a major player in the global football scene. Its steady growth and commitment to raising the profile of football in North America have set the stage for its continued success in the future.
