The Primera División of Chile, also known as Campeonato Nacional AFP PlanVital due to sponsorship reasons, is the top-tier football league in Chile. It was established in 1933, making it the oldest professional football league in Chile and the third oldest in South America, only surpassed by Argentina and Uruguay. The league is administered by the Asociación Nacional de Fútbol Profesional (ANFP), the governing body of football in Chile.

The Primera División consists of 16 teams that compete in a home-and-away round-robin format. The season typically runs from January to December and is divided into two tournaments: the Torneo Nacional and the Torneo de Transición. The team with the most points at the end of each tournament is declared the champion. If two or more teams are tied on points, goal difference is used to determine the winner.

The league has been dominated by two clubs: Colo-Colo and Universidad de Chile. Colo-Colo, based in Santiago, is the most successful club in the history of the league, having won over 30 championships. Universidad de Chile, also based in Santiago, is the second most successful club.

The Primera División has produced numerous talented players who have gone on to have successful careers in Europe and represent Chile at the international level. Notable alumni include Alexis Sánchez, Arturo Vidal, and Claudio Bravo, among others.

Relegation from the Primera División is based on a points-per-game system calculated over the previous two seasons. The team with the lowest average is automatically relegated to the Primera B, the second-tier league, while the team with the second-lowest average must play a two-legged playoff against a team from the Primera B to determine who will play in the Primera División the following season.

The Primera División is not just a football league; it is a vital part of Chilean culture and society. Matches often attract large crowds and are broadcasted on television and radio, contributing to the league's popularity and prestige. Despite facing challenges such as financial instability and hooliganism, the Primera División continues to thrive and remains a breeding ground for talented footballers.
