The Primera B, also known as the Torneo BetPlay due to sponsorship reasons, is the second-tier professional football league in Colombia. Founded in 1991 by the Colombian Football Federation, the league serves as a stepping stone for clubs aiming to reach the top-tier league, Categoría Primera A.

The Primera B has a rich history of promoting and nurturing local talent, with many players going on to achieve national and international recognition. The league has also been instrumental in the growth and development of football in Colombia, providing a competitive platform for clubs from smaller cities and towns.

The league operates on a promotion and relegation system with the Categoría Primera A. The structure of the league has undergone various changes over the years, but currently, it consists of 16 teams. The season is divided into two tournaments, the Apertura and the Finalización, with the winners of each tournament facing off in a two-legged promotion final. The winner of this final is promoted to the Primera A, while the other team has another chance to get promoted through a promotion/relegation playoff against the second-last team of the Primera A aggregate table.

Throughout its history, the Primera B has been a breeding ground for many successful teams. Clubs like Envigado, Once Caldas, and Atlético Huila have all come through the ranks of the Primera B to establish themselves in the top tier of Colombian football.

The league has also been a launchpad for many notable players. Renowned Colombian footballers like Radamel Falcao, James Rodríguez, and Jackson Martínez all had stints in the Primera B early in their careers, showcasing the league's ability to nurture and develop top-quality talent.

Despite being a second-tier league, the Primera B has a significant following in Colombia. The matches are known for their intensity and competitiveness, with teams battling it out for the coveted promotion spots. The league's popularity is also boosted by the fierce rivalries between the clubs, which often result in high-stakes matches that captivate the nation.

In conclusion, the Primera B is more than just a second-tier football league. It is a vital part of the Colombian football ecosystem, providing a platform for clubs and players to grow and develop. With its rich history, competitive nature, and ability to produce top-quality talent, the Primera B continues to play a crucial role in the advancement of Colombian football.
