Season2023

The Primera División of Costa Rica, also known as Liga FPD, is the top professional football league in Costa Rica. Established in 1921, it is one of the oldest football leagues in the Americas. The league is administered by UNAFUT, the National Union of Football, and is sanctioned by the Costa Rican Football Federation.

The Primera División has been the breeding ground for some of the best football talent in Central America. It has produced players who have gone on to represent Costa Rica in the FIFA World Cup and other international competitions. The league has also been a stepping stone for players to join more prestigious leagues in Europe and the Americas.

The league is composed of 12 teams, each playing two tournaments per year: the Apertura (Opening) from July to December, and the Clausura (Closing) from January to May. The winners of the two tournaments face off in a grand final to determine the national champion. If the same team wins both tournaments, they are automatically declared the champion.

The most successful club in the history of the Primera División is Deportivo Saprissa, with over 30 championships to their name. Other notable teams include Liga Deportiva Alajuelense and Club Sport Herediano. The league has a promotion and relegation system with the Liga de Ascenso, the second-tier football league in Costa Rica.

Matches in the Primera División are known for their passionate fans and intense rivalries, particularly the "Clásico Nacional" between Deportivo Saprissa and Liga Deportiva Alajuelense. These matches are among the most anticipated events in Costa Rican sports.

Over the years, the Primera División has grown in stature and popularity. It is now considered one of the strongest leagues in CONCACAF, the football confederation for North and Central America and the Caribbean. Despite its small size, Costa Rica's Primera División has made a significant impact on the regional and international football stage.

The league has also made strides in infrastructure and development. Many teams now have their own stadiums and training facilities, and youth development programs have been established to nurture the next generation of Costa Rican footballers.

In conclusion, the Primera División of Costa Rica is a historic and prestigious football league. It has played a crucial role in the development of football in Costa Rica and continues to be a vital part of the country's sporting landscape.
