The Football National League (FNL), also known as Fotbalová národní liga, is the second tier of professional football in the Czech Republic. Established in 1993, following the dissolution of Czechoslovakia, the league has played a significant role in the development of Czech football.

The FNL is governed by the Football Association of the Czech Republic (FAČR), the sport's national governing body. The league consists of 16 teams, with each season running from July to May. The teams compete in a round-robin format, playing each other twice, once at home and once away. The top two teams at the end of the season are promoted to the Czech First League, while the bottom three are relegated to the Bohemian Football League or the Moravian-Silesian Football League, the third tier of Czech football.

The FNL has been a breeding ground for many talented players who have gone on to make their mark in the Czech First League and beyond. It has also been home to several clubs with rich histories, including FK Dukla Prague, SK Dynamo České Budějovice, and 1. FC Slovácko, all of which have had successful spells in the top flight.

Despite being a second-tier league, the FNL has managed to attract a decent following. The league's matches are often closely contested, and the promotion and relegation battles add an extra layer of excitement. The FNL also has a reputation for producing high-scoring matches, making it a favorite among neutral fans.

Over the years, the FNL has faced several challenges, including financial instability and match-fixing scandals. However, the league has shown resilience and has taken steps to improve its image and integrity. Measures such as stricter financial controls and the introduction of video assistant referees (VAR) have been implemented to ensure fair play and to enhance the league's credibility.

The FNL may not have the glamour and glitz of the Czech First League, but it remains an integral part of the Czech football landscape. Its contribution to the development of players and clubs cannot be underestimated. The league's competitive nature, combined with its commitment to fair play and integrity, ensures that it continues to be a vital stepping stone for players and clubs aiming for the top echelons of Czech football.
