Ligue 2, also known as Domino's Ligue 2 for sponsorship reasons, is the second division of professional football in France. It operates under the auspices of the French Football Federation (FFF) and is one step below the top-tier Ligue 1. The league, which was established in 1933, has a rich history and has been the launching pad for many of France's most talented players.

Ligue 2 is composed of 20 teams, each playing 38 matches during the season, which typically runs from August to May. The format is a double round-robin, with each team playing every other team twice, once at home and once away. The teams are ranked in the league table by points, with three points awarded for a win, one for a draw, and none for a loss.

At the end of each season, the top two teams in Ligue 2 are automatically promoted to Ligue 1. The third-place team enters a playoff with the 18th-place team from Ligue 1, offering another potential route for promotion. Conversely, the bottom two teams in Ligue 2 are relegated to the third-tier Championnat National, while the 18th-place team enters a playoff with the third-place team from the Championnat National for a chance to retain their Ligue 2 status.

Over the years, Ligue 2 has been known for its competitive balance and unpredictability. Many teams have experienced both the highs of promotion and the lows of relegation, reflecting the league's competitive nature. The league has also been a breeding ground for future stars, with players such as Olivier Giroud, Riyad Mahrez, and N'Golo Kanté all having spent time in Ligue 2 early in their careers.

Ligue 2 matches are known for their passionate fans and intense atmospheres, reflecting the deep love for football that exists throughout France. The league also has a strong commitment to youth development, with many clubs operating successful academies that produce a steady stream of talented young players.

In recent years, Ligue 2 has also made strides in terms of its international exposure. Matches are now broadcast in several countries, helping to raise the league's profile and attract a wider audience. Despite being the second tier of French football, Ligue 2 continues to play a crucial role in the country's football landscape, providing a platform for clubs and players to develop and compete at a high level.
