Super League 1, also known as the Super League Interwetten for sponsorship reasons, is the top professional football league in Greece. It was established in 2006, succeeding the Alpha Ethniki, which had been the country's premier football competition since 1927. The league is organized by the Hellenic Football Federation (HFF) and is contested by 14 teams.

Super League 1 operates on a system of promotion and relegation with the Football League, the second-tier league in Greece. The season typically runs from August to May, with each team playing 26 matches (playing each other twice, home and away). The top six teams then enter a playoff round to determine the champion and the teams qualifying for the UEFA competitions. The bottom two teams are relegated to the Football League.

The league has been dominated by a few teams throughout its history. Olympiacos has been the most successful, with multiple titles to their name. Other successful clubs include Panathinaikos and AEK Athens. These clubs have a significant fan base and have contributed to the league's popularity.

Super League 1 has also been a platform for many talented players who have gone on to have successful careers in some of Europe's top leagues. It has been known for its competitive nature and unpredictable outcomes, which adds to the excitement and appeal of the league.

Despite facing challenges such as financial instability and match-fixing scandals, Super League 1 has managed to maintain its status as the pinnacle of Greek football. The league has taken measures to improve its image and competitiveness, such as implementing stricter financial control measures and promoting fair play.

The league's matches are broadcasted both domestically and internationally, contributing to its global recognition. The Super League 1 has also been active in community service, with clubs and players participating in various charity events and initiatives.

In summary, Super League 1 is not just a football league; it is a symbol of national pride and passion for Greeks. It represents the country's love for football, and despite its challenges, continues to be a significant part of Greek sports culture.
