The Liga Nacional de Fútbol Profesional de Honduras, commonly known as Liga Nacional, is the top professional football league in Honduras. Established in 1965, it is the highest level of football competition in the country and is sanctioned by the Federación Nacional Autónoma de Fútbol de Honduras (FENAFUTH).
The Liga Nacional is composed of 10 teams, each playing two tournaments per year: the Apertura, which starts in the middle of the year, and the Clausura, which begins at the end of the year. Each tournament consists of a regular season followed by a playoff stage, culminating in a final match to determine the champion.
Over the years, the Liga Nacional has been dominated by three teams: Club Deportivo Olimpia, Club Deportivo Motagua, and Real Club Deportivo España. These teams have won the majority of the league championships, with Olimpia being the most successful with over 30 titles.
The league has been a launching pad for many Honduran footballers who have gone on to have successful careers both domestically and internationally. Players such as David Suazo, Wilson Palacios, and Maynor Figueroa all started their careers in the Liga Nacional before moving to European clubs.
The Liga Nacional has also played a crucial role in the development of Honduran football on the international stage. The league's competitive nature and high level of play have contributed to the success of the Honduran national team, which has qualified for multiple FIFA World Cup tournaments.
Despite facing challenges such as financial instability and stadium safety issues, the Liga Nacional continues to be a cornerstone of Honduran football. Its commitment to nurturing local talent and promoting competitive football has ensured its status as one of Central America's premier football leagues.
