The Nemzeti Bajnokság I, commonly known as NB I, is the premier professional football league in Hungary. Established in 1901, it is one of the oldest football leagues in Europe. The league is managed by the Hungarian Football Federation and comprises 12 teams.

The NB I league operates on a system of promotion and relegation with the Nemzeti Bajnokság II, the second-tier football league in Hungary. The season, which runs from July to May, is divided into a home-and-away format where each team plays the other twice, resulting in 33 matches per season. The team with the most points at the end of the season is crowned the champion and earns a spot in the UEFA Champions League qualifiers.

Throughout its history, the NB I league has been dominated by a few teams. Ferencvárosi TC, based in Budapest, is the most successful club in the league's history, having won numerous titles. Other notable teams include Budapest Honvéd FC, MTK Budapest FC, and Debreceni VSC.

The league has produced several notable players who have gone on to have successful careers both domestically and internationally. These include Ferenc Puskás, one of the greatest footballers of all time, who started his career at Kispest AC, now known as Budapest Honvéd FC.

Despite facing challenges such as financial instability and fluctuating attendance rates, the NB I league remains a significant part of Hungarian sports culture. It continues to be a platform for nurturing local talent and contributing to the global football scene. The league's matches are broadcasted both nationally and internationally, reflecting its broad fan base and its importance in European football.

In recent years, efforts have been made to improve the league's competitiveness and overall quality. This includes infrastructure development, with several clubs upgrading their stadiums to meet UEFA standards. The league has also seen increased investment, with clubs strengthening their squads to compete better in European competitions.

The NB I league, while not as globally recognized as some of its European counterparts, holds a rich history and continues to play a crucial role in Hungarian football. Its contribution to the sport, both in nurturing home-grown talent and providing competitive football, is significant. The league's future looks promising, with continuous efforts to improve its standards and competitiveness.
