Serie B, also known as Serie BKT for sponsorship reasons, is the second-highest division in the Italian football league system after the Serie A. Established in 1929, it has been operating for over 90 years, providing a platform for teams to compete for promotion to the top-tier Serie A.

Serie B is governed by the Lega Serie B, which was created in 2010 as a result of the split between Serie A and Serie B clubs. It is responsible for the organization and management of the league, ensuring fair play and competitiveness.

The league comprises 20 teams, and the season usually runs from August to May. Each team plays 38 matches, both home and away against every other team in the league. The ranking is determined by points with three points awarded for a win, one for a draw, and none for a loss. The top two teams at the end of the season are automatically promoted to Serie A. The teams finishing from third to eighth place compete in a playoff to determine the third promotion spot.

On the other end of the table, the bottom three teams are relegated to Serie C, the third-tier league. The team finishing 16th enters a two-legged playoff against the team finishing 19th, with the loser also facing relegation.

Serie B has been a breeding ground for many talented players who have gone on to make their mark in Serie A and other top European leagues. It also serves as a stepping stone for many coaches who aspire to manage at the highest level.

Throughout its history, Serie B has seen many ups and downs, including financial struggles and match-fixing scandals. However, it has always managed to bounce back and maintain its status as one of the most competitive and exciting second-tier leagues in European football.

The league has also been home to several historic clubs, including Palermo, Bari, and Parma, who have all experienced the highs of Serie A football and the lows of financial difficulties and relegation.

Serie B's most successful club is Genoa, with six championships, followed by Palermo, Bari, and Atalanta, each with three titles. However, the competition remains fierce, with many clubs vying for the coveted promotion spots each season.

In conclusion, Serie B is more than just a second-tier league. It is a vital part of Italian football's ecosystem, nurturing talent and providing thrilling competition. Despite its challenges, it continues to captivate fans with its unpredictability and drama.
