The J2 League, officially known as the Meiji Yasuda J2 League for sponsorship reasons, is the second division of the Japan Professional Football League (JPFL) and the second-tier professional association football league in Japan. It is currently one of the most competitive leagues in the country, serving as a platform for clubs to gain promotion to the top-tier J1 League.

Established in 1999, the J2 League was created following the restructuring of the J.League, which split the old J.League into two divisions. The J2 League started with ten clubs, but it has since grown to feature 22 clubs as of the 2021 season. The league operates on a system of promotion and relegation, with the top two teams each season gaining automatic promotion to the J1 League, while the third-placed team enters a playoff with the 16th-placed team in the J1 League.

The J2 League has been instrumental in the development of football in Japan, providing a competitive environment for clubs outside the top tier. It has also been a breeding ground for young talent, with many players using the league as a stepping stone to the J1 League and beyond.

The league operates on a double round-robin format, with each team playing the others twice, once at home and once away. The season typically runs from late February or early March to early December, with each team playing a total of 42 games.

The J2 League has been sponsored by Meiji Yasuda Life since 2015, one of Japan's largest life insurance companies. The league's matches are broadcasted both domestically and internationally, reflecting the growing popularity of Japanese football.

Over the years, the J2 League has seen a variety of clubs achieve success. The most successful club in terms of league titles is Consadole Sapporo, with three championships. Other notable clubs include Shonan Bellmare, Yokohama FC, and Vissel Kobe, all of which have won the league twice.

The J2 League is known for its competitive nature and unpredictability, with clubs often fluctuating between the divisions. This unpredictability, coupled with the league's commitment to developing Japanese football, makes the J2 League an exciting and important part of the country's football landscape.
