The Liga de Expansión MX is a professional football league based in Mexico. Established in 2020, it operates as the second tier of the Mexican football league system, below the Liga MX. The league was formed as a direct response to the financial struggles faced by many clubs in the Ascenso MX, the previous second division league, which was suspended indefinitely due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Liga de Expansión MX was designed to strengthen the infrastructure of Mexican football by providing a platform for teams to develop young talent and stabilize their financial situations. The league consists of 16 teams, including some from the dissolved Ascenso MX, Liga Premier teams, and Liga MX teams with a youth development focus.
The league operates under a unique financial model. Unlike traditional football leagues, the Liga de Expansión MX does not feature promotion and relegation for its initial years. This decision was made to allow teams to focus on financial stability and infrastructure development without the pressure of maintaining their league status.
The Liga de Expansión MX also has a unique point system. In addition to the traditional three points for a win and one point for a draw, teams can earn an extra point by winning a penalty shootout after a drawn match. This innovative approach aims to encourage attacking play and increase the excitement of matches.
The league's inaugural season took place in the second half of 2020, with Club Tepatitlán being crowned as the first champions. The Liga de Expansión MX has quickly gained recognition for its competitive matches and its commitment to developing Mexican football talent. Despite its short existence, the league has already produced several players who have moved on to the top-tier Liga MX and even to European leagues.
The Liga de Expansión MX represents a significant step in the evolution of Mexican football. Its focus on financial stability, infrastructure development, and youth progression provides a sustainable model for the future growth of the sport in Mexico. Despite the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, the league has shown resilience and adaptability, promising a bright future for Mexican football.
