The Primera Division, also known as Liga Primera, is the top-tier professional football league in Nicaragua. Established in 1933, it is one of the oldest football leagues in Central America. The league is governed by the Nicaraguan Football Federation (FENIFUT) and is recognized by the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) and the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF).
The Primera Division consists of 10 teams that compete in two separate tournaments each year: the Apertura, which runs from August to December, and the Clausura, which takes place from February to May. Each tournament is divided into two phases: the regular season and the playoffs. During the regular season, teams play each other twice, once at home and once away, for a total of 18 matches. The top four teams then advance to the playoffs, where they compete in a knockout format to determine the champion.
The league has been dominated by a few clubs throughout its history. Real Estelí FC, Diriangén FC, and Managua FC are among the most successful clubs in the Primera Division, with Real Estelí holding the most titles. The league has also produced several notable players who have gone on to represent the Nicaraguan national team in international competitions.
Despite being a small league in global terms, the Primera Division has gained international attention for its resilience. It was one of the few leagues worldwide that continued playing during the COVID-19 pandemic, with matches broadcasted internationally, giving football fans around the world a chance to watch live football when most other leagues had stopped.
The Primera Division has played a crucial role in the development of football in Nicaragua. It provides a platform for local talent to showcase their skills and has contributed to the steady improvement of the national team's performance on the international stage. Despite facing challenges such as limited resources and infrastructure, the league continues to grow and evolve, testament to the passion for football in Nicaragua.
