Superettan is the second-tier professional football league in Sweden, established in 2000. It operates under the administration of the Swedish Football Association, the governing body for football in Sweden. The league is a stepping stone for clubs aiming to compete in the top-tier Allsvenskan, with promotion and relegation systems in place.
The league comprises 16 teams, each playing 30 matches in a season that typically runs from April to November. The top two teams at the end of the season are promoted to Allsvenskan, while the third-placed team gets a chance to compete in a play-off against the 14th placed team from Allsvenskan. The bottom two teams in Superettan are relegated to Division 1, the third-tier league, and replaced by the top two teams from that league. The 13th and 14th placed teams in Superettan play a relegation/promotion play-off against the second and third-placed teams from Division 1.
Superettan has been a launchpad for many clubs that have gone on to achieve success in Allsvenskan. Notable examples include Hammarby IF and IFK Norrköping, both of whom have won the Allsvenskan title after gaining promotion from Superettan. The league has also been instrumental in the development of many Swedish players who have gone on to represent the national team.
The league's matches are broadcasted on TV4 Sport, with some games also available on the network's digital platform, C More. The league has a wide following in Sweden and has grown in popularity over the years, with an average attendance of around 3,000 spectators per match.
Superettan's competitive nature, combined with its role in developing Swedish football talent, makes it an integral part of the country's football structure. Despite being a second-tier league, it maintains high standards of professionalism and competitiveness, contributing significantly to the overall growth and development of Swedish football.
