AFC Hornchurch, also known as the Urchins, is a semi-professional football club based in Hornchurch, Greater London, England. The club was originally established in 1923 as Hornchurch & Upminster, but it was not until 2005 that the club was reformed as AFC Hornchurch, following the liquidation of the previous club, Hornchurch FC.
The Urchins play their home games at the Hornchurch Stadium, also known as Bridge Avenue, which has a capacity of approximately 3,500 spectators. The club's traditional colours are red and white, reflecting the colours of the Hornchurch town crest.
Throughout its history, AFC Hornchurch has competed in various leagues within the English football pyramid. After the club's reformation in 2005, the Urchins started in the Essex Senior Football League. They quickly climbed the ranks and were promoted to the Isthmian League Division One North in their first season. In the 2007-2008 season, the club achieved promotion to the Isthmian League Premier Division, where they have spent most of their recent history.
AFC Hornchurch has had a number of notable successes in cup competitions. The club won the Essex Senior Cup in 2016 and has reached the final on multiple occasions. The Urchins have also had a strong run in the FA Cup, reaching the first round proper in the 2008-2009 season.
Despite facing financial difficulties in the past, AFC Hornchurch has shown resilience and determination, both on and off the pitch. The club is supported by a dedicated fan base and a committed group of volunteers who help to ensure its smooth operation. The club also has a strong community focus, running a number of youth teams and actively participating in local events.
Over the years, AFC Hornchurch has been home to several players who have gone on to play at a higher level, including former Premier League players Jimmy Bullard and Jobi McAnuff. The club has also been managed by a number of experienced coaches, including current manager Mark Stimson, who has previously managed at Football League level.
AFC Hornchurch's motto, "Pride, Passion, Belief", encapsulates the spirit of this resilient club. Despite the challenges they have faced, the Urchins continue to compete with determination and ambition, demonstrating the strength and spirit of non-league football in England.
