AS Puma Generalena is a professional football club based in General Viejo, Pérez Zeledón, Costa Rica. The club, which is often simply referred to as Puma, has a rich history in Costa Rican football, having been founded in 2004. Despite its relatively recent inception, Puma has managed to make a significant impact on the national football scene.
Puma was initially established as a second division team, but their ambition and determination quickly saw them rise through the ranks. The club's first major achievement came in 2014, when they won the Liga de Ascenso, Costa Rica's second division league, earning them a promotion to the top tier, Liga FPD.
During their time in the Liga FPD, Puma proved to be a competitive side, often challenging the more established teams. They were known for their aggressive style of play and their never-say-die attitude, traits that endeared them to fans and neutrals alike. However, despite their best efforts, they were unable to secure any major trophies during their stint in the top division.
Puma's time in the Liga FPD was short-lived, as they were relegated back to the second division in 2016. Despite this setback, the club has remained committed to its goal of returning to the top tier of Costa Rican football. They continue to be a strong force in the Liga de Ascenso, consistently finishing in the top half of the table.
One of the key features of Puma is their commitment to youth development. The club has a thriving youth academy, which has produced several players who have gone on to represent the Costa Rican national team. This focus on nurturing young talent has not only benefited the club but also contributed to the overall development of football in the country.
AS Puma Generalena's home ground is the Estadio Municipal Pérez Zeledón, a venue they share with Municipal Pérez Zeledón, another team from the same region. The stadium, which has a capacity of around 6,000, is known for its vibrant atmosphere, particularly during local derbies.
Despite the ups and downs, Puma has remained a beloved institution in General Viejo and the wider Pérez Zeledón region. The club's passionate fan base, known as the 'Puma Family', has been a constant source of support, turning out in large numbers for every match.
In summary, AS Puma Generalena may not have the long history or trophy-laden cabinet of some of their counterparts, but they have made a significant mark on Costa Rican football in their own right. Their rise to the top division, their commitment to youth development, and their passionate fan base are all testament to the club's ambition and resilience. As they continue their journey, Puma will undoubtedly remain a key player in the narrative of Costa Rican football.
