Baník Ostrava was initially established as SK Slezská Ostrava, and it was not until 1928 that the club adopted its current name. The club has had a successful run in the Czechoslovak First League, the top-tier football league in Czechoslovakia, which existed from 1925 to 1993. Baník Ostrava won the league title four times, in 1976, 1980, 1981, and 1991. The club also clinched the Czechoslovak Cup twice, in 1973 and 1978.
Following the dissolution of Czechoslovakia in 1993, Baník Ostrava has competed in the Czech First League, the successor to the Czechoslovak First League. The club secured its first league title in the 2003-2004 season, marking a significant milestone in its history. Baník Ostrava has also been successful in the Czech Cup, winning the prestigious tournament in 2005.

The club has a reputation for nurturing young talent, with a successful youth academy that has produced several players who have gone on to represent the Czech Republic at the international level. Despite facing financial difficulties and relegation battles in recent years, Baník Ostrava has managed to maintain its status in the Czech First League. The club's resilience and determination, coupled with the unwavering support of its fans, have been instrumental in overcoming these challenges.
Baník Ostrava's traditional colors are blue and white, symbolizing loyalty and purity. The club's fans, known as the 'Baníkovci', are renowned for their passionate support and are considered among the most devoted in the Czech Republic.
