Chelmsford City Football Club is a semi-professional football club based in Chelmsford, Essex, England. The club was established in 1878, making it one of the oldest football clubs in the country. The team, known as the Clarets, plays its home matches at the Melbourne Community Stadium, a venue with a capacity of over 3,000 spectators.
The club's history is steeped in both success and struggle. Chelmsford City has spent the majority of its existence in the non-league system, with its most successful period coming in the 1960s and 1970s when it was a powerhouse in the Southern League. The Clarets won the league title three times during this period and reached the third round of the FA Cup on several occasions, earning a reputation as one of the strongest non-league sides in the country.
However, financial difficulties in the late 1990s led to a period of decline for the club. Chelmsford City was relegated to the Isthmian League and was forced to sell its New Writtle Street ground. The club spent several years in the wilderness before a resurgence in the mid-2000s, culminating in a move to the Melbourne Community Stadium in 2006.
Since then, Chelmsford City has re-established itself as a competitive force in non-league football. The club has consistently challenged for promotion to the National League, reaching the play-offs on multiple occasions. The Clarets have also enjoyed success in the FA Trophy, reaching the semi-finals in 2018.
Chelmsford City's traditional colours are claret and blue, and its crest features a sword and sceptre, symbols of the city of Chelmsford. The club has a strong community focus, running numerous youth teams and engaging in various local initiatives.
Despite its ups and downs, Chelmsford City FC remains a beloved institution in Chelmsford and the wider Essex area. The club's passionate fan base, known as the 'Claret Army', continues to support the team through thick and thin, embodying the spirit of resilience and determination that has characterised Chelmsford City's long and storied history.
