Ergotelis Football Club, commonly known as Ergotelis, is a professional football club based in Heraklion, the capital city of the island of Crete in Greece. Named after the ancient Cretan athlete Ergoteles, the club was established in 1929, making it one of the oldest football clubs in the country.
Ergotelis has a rich history, marked by both triumphs and challenges. The club has spent most of its existence in the lower divisions of Greek football, but it has also enjoyed periods of success, particularly in the early 21st century. The club's golden era began in 2004 when they were promoted to the Super League Greece, the top tier of Greek football, for the first time in their history. They remained in the Super League for a decade, achieving their highest ever finish, a seventh place, in the 2007-2008 season.
The club's home ground is the Pankritio Stadium, a multi-purpose stadium in Heraklion, which is also one of the venues used by the Greek national team. The stadium, which has a capacity of over 26,000, is known for its passionate and loyal supporters, who have stood by the club through thick and thin.
Ergotelis has also been known for its youth development, with a number of players progressing from the club's academy to the first team and beyond. The club's youth system has produced several players who have gone on to represent Greece at various levels.
Despite its successes, Ergotelis has also faced financial difficulties, which led to its relegation to the third tier of Greek football in 2015. However, the club has shown resilience in the face of adversity, bouncing back to the second tier, the Football League, in 2017.
Ergotelis' team colors are yellow and black, and their emblem is a depiction of the ancient Cretan runner Ergoteles, after whom the club is named. The club's motto, "Μέγα Το Της Εργοτέλειας Έργον", translates to "Great is the task of Ergotelis", reflecting the club's commitment to overcoming challenges and striving for success.
Throughout its history, Ergotelis has been more than just a football club. It has been a symbol of Heraklion and Crete, representing the region's passion for football and its enduring spirit. Despite the ups and downs, Ergotelis continues to hold a special place in the hearts of its fans and the wider Greek football community.
