Fotbal Club FCSB, commonly known as FCSB or Steaua Bucharest, is a professional football club based in Bucharest, Romania. Founded in 1947 as ASA București, the club has a rich history and is one of the most successful in Romanian football.
FCSB's journey started in the Romanian Army, which established the club to boost its morale. The club changed its name to Steaua București in 1961, a name that stuck until 2017 when a long-standing legal dispute with the Ministry of National Defence of Romania forced a name change to FCSB. Despite the name change, the club has retained its iconic red and blue colors and star logo, symbolizing its 26 national championship wins.
FCSB's golden era came in the mid-1980s when it won the European Champions Cup in 1986, becoming the first Eastern European club to achieve this feat. The club reached the final again in 1989 but lost to AC Milan. Domestically, FCSB has been a dominant force, winning the Liga I, Romania's top-tier football league, 26 times, the Romanian Cup 24 times, and the Romanian Super Cup 6 times.
The club's home ground is the Arena Națională, the largest stadium in Romania with a seating capacity of over 55,000. FCSB shares this stadium with their city rivals, Dinamo București, with whom they contest the "Eternal Derby", one of the most heated rivalries in European football.
FCSB has a reputation for nurturing young talent, with many players going on to have successful careers in top European leagues. Notable alumni include Gheorghe Hagi, considered one of the best attacking midfielders in Europe and one of the greatest Romanian players of all time, and Marius Lăcătuș, the club's all-time top scorer.
Despite recent challenges, including financial difficulties and a decline in performance, FCSB remains one of the most popular and influential clubs in Romania. The club's fan base is vast and passionate, with supporters spread across the country and beyond. The club's motto, "The Star Always Rises", reflects its enduring spirit and ambition to return to the top of Romanian and European football.
In summary, FCSB is a club with a rich history and a strong tradition of success. From its origins in the Romanian Army to its triumph in the European Champions Cup and its numerous domestic titles, the club has left an indelible mark on Romanian and European football. Despite recent challenges, FCSB continues to inspire with its resilience and commitment to excellence.
