Gefle IF is a historic Swedish football club based in Gävle, Sweden. Founded in 1882, it is one of the oldest football clubs in Sweden, with a rich history spanning over a century. The club's name, Gefle, is an old spelling of Gävle, the city where the club is based.
Gefle IF has spent most of its history in the top tiers of Swedish football. The club first reached Allsvenskan, the top flight of Swedish football, in 1933. Since then, it has had several stints in the Allsvenskan, with the most recent one lasting from 2005 to 2016. In 2017, the club was relegated to the Superettan, the second tier of Swedish football, where it currently competes.
Despite its long history, Gefle IF has never won the Allsvenskan or the Svenska Cupen, the main domestic cup competition in Sweden. However, the club has had several notable achievements. It has reached the Svenska Cupen final twice, in 1979 and 1981, and has finished as high as fourth in the Allsvenskan, in 1935 and 1940.
Gefle IF has also produced several notable players who have gone on to have successful careers in Sweden and abroad. These include Anders Kallur, who later became a successful ice hockey player and won four Stanley Cups with the New York Islanders, and Johan Oremo, who was the top scorer in the Superettan in 2004 and later played in the Allsvenskan and abroad.
The club plays its home games at the Gavlevallen, a modern stadium with a capacity of around 6,500. The stadium, which was opened in 2015, replaced the club's old home, the Strömvallen, which had been in use since 1923.
Gefle IF has a strong local following and is known for its passionate fans. The club's traditional colors are blue and white, and its emblem features a lion, a symbol of Gävle, holding a football.
Although Gefle IF has faced challenges in recent years, including financial difficulties and relegation battles, it remains a beloved institution in Gävle and a significant part of Swedish football history. The club's long history, passionate fan base, and commitment to developing local talent make it a unique and important part of the Swedish football landscape.
