About Harelbeke

Harelbeke Football Club, often known as KRC Harelbeke, was a renowned football club based in Harelbeke, Belgium. Founded in 1930, the club was assigned the matricule number 1611. During its existence, it was known for its distinctive blue and white team colors, which earned it the nickname "The Rats."

The club began its journey in the lower leagues, gradually working its way up the Belgian football league system. It achieved its first significant milestone in 1951 when it reached the national levels. The club spent several seasons in the third and fourth divisions before making its way to the second division in 1971.

The 1990s marked a golden era for KRC Harelbeke. In the 1994-1995 season, the club secured promotion to the Belgian First Division, the highest level of football in Belgium, for the first time in its history. This achievement was a testament to the club's growth and development over the years.

In the First Division, KRC Harelbeke enjoyed several successful seasons, finishing as high as 6th place in the 1998-1999 season. This allowed them to participate in the Intertoto Cup, a summer football competition for European clubs that had not qualified for the Champions League or UEFA Cup.

Despite these successes, KRC Harelbeke faced financial difficulties at the turn of the millennium. These challenges led to the club's relegation to the third division in 2001. The financial situation worsened, and in 2002, the club was declared bankrupt.

Following the bankruptcy, a new club, KRC Zuid-West-Vlaanderen, was formed, which attempted to continue the legacy of KRC Harelbeke. However, this club also faced financial difficulties and was dissolved in 2003.

Today, the spirit of KRC Harelbeke lives on in the form of KRC Harelbeke, a club formed in 2004. This club, which plays in the lower leagues of Belgian football, is considered the spiritual successor of the original KRC Harelbeke. It carries on the club's traditions, including the blue and white team colors and the nickname "The Rats."

In summary, KRC Harelbeke was a prominent football club in Belgium, known for its rise from the lower leagues to the First Division. Despite its eventual dissolution due to financial difficulties, the club's legacy continues to inspire and influence football in Harelbeke and beyond.
