Holstein Kiel is a historic football club based in Kiel, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. Founded on October 7, 1900, the club has a rich history that spans over a century, making it one of the oldest football clubs in the country. It is also known as "Die Störche" (The Storks) due to a stork featured in its emblem.
The club's early years were marked by regional success, winning the North German football championship ten times. In the 1911-1912 season, Holstein Kiel even reached the final of the German football championship, although they were defeated by Karlsruher FV.
Holstein Kiel's golden era came in the 1930s and 1940s when they competed in the Gauliga Nordmark, one of the sixteen top-flight divisions formed during the re-organization of German football under the Third Reich. During this period, they won the division several times and even reached the semi-finals of the national championship in 1943.
However, the post-war period was less successful for Holstein Kiel. They spent most of the time in the second and third tiers of German football, with occasional forays into the top flight. Despite these challenges, the club has always been known for its fighting spirit and commitment to the development of young players.
In recent years, Holstein Kiel has seen a resurgence. In the 2017-2018 season, they finished third in the 2. Bundesliga, the second-highest division in German football, narrowly missing out on promotion to the Bundesliga after losing in the playoff. This achievement marked their highest finish in the league structure since the formation of the Bundesliga in 1963.
The club's home ground is the Holstein-Stadion, a venue with a capacity of over 15,000 spectators. The stadium is known for its intimate atmosphere, with the fans close to the pitch, creating a unique matchday experience.
Holstein Kiel's youth academy has a strong reputation for developing young talents, with several academy graduates going on to have successful careers in professional football. The club's commitment to youth development is a key part of its philosophy and long-term strategy.
Despite the ups and downs, Holstein Kiel remains a beloved institution in Kiel and the wider Schleswig-Holstein region. The club's history, community focus, and commitment to youth development make it a unique and important part of German football culture.
