Ilkeston Town Football Club is a semi-professional football club based in Ilkeston, Derbyshire, England. Established in 1894, the club has a rich history that spans over a century, marked by both triumphs and challenges.
The club's journey began in the Midland League, where they played until 1968. They then joined the Southern League and later the Northern Premier League. Ilkeston Town's first significant success came in the 1990-91 season when they won the Northern Premier League title. This victory propelled them into the Football Conference, the highest level of non-league football in England.
However, the club's fortunes took a turn for the worse in the early 2000s. Financial difficulties led to the club being liquidated in 2010. Despite this setback, the club was reformed later the same year as Ilkeston FC and joined the Northern Premier League Division One South for the 2011-12 season.
The reformed club enjoyed some success, winning promotion to the Northern Premier League Premier Division in their first season. However, financial troubles once again plagued the club, and it was liquidated in 2017.
Undeterred by these challenges, the club was reformed once again, this time as Ilkeston Town FC. Under the new ownership of local businessman Alan Hardy, the club joined the Midland Football League Division One for the 2017-18 season. The team quickly found success, winning the league title and earning promotion to the Premier Division.
Ilkeston Town's home ground is the New Manor Ground, a stadium with a capacity of 3,029. The club's colours are red and white, and their nickname is "The Robins."
Throughout its history, Ilkeston Town FC has been known for its commitment to developing young talent. The club's academy has produced several players who have gone on to play at higher levels, including England international goalkeeper Ben Foster.
Despite the ups and downs, Ilkeston Town FC remains a beloved part of the local community. The club's resilience and determination to overcome adversity have endeared it to fans and made it a symbol of the town's spirit. The club's motto, "Perseverando," Latin for "By Persevering," perfectly encapsulates the club's enduring legacy.
