Kariobangi Sharks Football Club is a professional football team based in Nairobi, Kenya. Established in 2000, the club has grown to become one of the most recognized and successful football teams in the Kenyan Premier League.
The club was founded by Nick Mwendwa, who later became the president of the Football Kenya Federation. The team's name, Kariobangi Sharks, is derived from the Kariobangi neighborhood in Nairobi where the club was formed. The 'Sharks' nickname was adopted to symbolize the team's ambition and determination.
Kariobangi Sharks started in the lower tiers of Kenyan football, gradually climbing up the ranks through hard work and perseverance. They gained promotion to the Kenyan Premier League, the top tier of Kenyan football, in 2016 after winning the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) National Super League.
Since their promotion, the Sharks have been a competitive force in the Kenyan Premier League. They have consistently finished in the top half of the league table and have competed in several domestic cup competitions. The club's most significant achievement came in 2018 when they won the FKF Shield Cup, earning them a place in the CAF Confederation Cup, Africa's second-tier club competition.
The Kariobangi Sharks have also been instrumental in developing young Kenyan talent. The club has a strong youth development policy, with a focus on nurturing and promoting young players from their academy to the first team. Several players have moved on from the Sharks to play for bigger clubs in Kenya and abroad, as well as the Kenyan national team.
The club plays its home games at the Moi International Sports Centre, a multi-purpose stadium in Nairobi. The Sharks are known for their attacking style of play and their passionate fan base, who are known as the 'Shark Attack'. The club's colors are blue and white, symbolizing the sky and peace respectively.
Despite being a relatively young club, Kariobangi Sharks have made a significant impact on Kenyan football. Their success on the pitch and their commitment to youth development have set a benchmark for other clubs in the country. The Kariobangi Sharks continue to strive for excellence, aiming to become a dominant force in Kenyan and African football.
