Parma Calcio 1913, commonly referred to as Parma, is an Italian football club based in Parma, Emilia-Romagna. The club was founded in December 1913 and has since become a notable name in Italian football. Parma's history is marked by both significant achievements and challenging periods, reflecting the club's resilience and enduring passion for the sport.
Parma's early years were spent in the lower divisions until they achieved Serie B status in the 1970s. However, it was in the late 1980s and 1990s that Parma enjoyed its golden era. Under the ownership of the Parmalat company, the club experienced a rapid rise, reaching Serie A, the top tier of Italian football, in 1990. This period saw Parma win two UEFA Cups, in 1995 and 1999, two Italian Cups, in 1992 and 1999, and a European Super Cup in 1993. They also finished as runners-up in the 1996-97 Serie A season.
However, the club's fortunes took a turn for the worse in the early 2000s when Parmalat collapsed due to a financial scandal. This led to Parma's relegation to Serie B in 2008. The club faced further financial difficulties, leading to bankruptcy and demotion to Serie D, the fourth level of Italian football, in 2015.
Despite these setbacks, Parma showed remarkable resilience. The club, re-founded as Parma Calcio 1913, achieved three consecutive promotions from 2015 to 2018, returning to Serie A for the 2018-19 season. This marked a significant comeback, demonstrating the club's enduring spirit and passion.
Parma's home ground is the Stadio Ennio Tardini, one of the oldest stadiums in Italy. The club's traditional colours are white and blue, but their home kit is typically a cross between white and yellow-blue. Parma's fans are known for their passionate support, with the 'Boys Parma 1977' being one of the oldest ultras groups in Italy.
Over the years, Parma has been home to several notable players, including Gianfranco Zola, Fabio Cannavaro, Hernan Crespo, and Gianluigi Buffon. These players have contributed to Parma's rich history and have helped to establish the club as a respected name in Italian football.
Despite the ups and downs, Parma remains a symbol of resilience in Italian football. The club's history is a testament to the enduring passion of its players, staff, and fans, and their unwavering belief in the face of adversity. Parma's journey serves as a reminder that success in football is not just about winning trophies, but also about the spirit of the game and the community that supports it.
