Sport Comércio Salgueiros, commonly known as Salgueiros, is a historic football club based in Paranhos, Portugal. Founded on December 8, 1911, Salgueiros is known for its distinctive red and white striped uniforms and its passionate, loyal fan base.
In its early years, Salgueiros was a local club, competing in regional leagues. However, in the 1980s and 1990s, the club experienced a golden era, rising through the ranks of Portuguese football to reach the Primeira Liga, the top tier of Portuguese football. This was a remarkable achievement for a club of Salgueiros' size and resources.
Salgueiros' time in the Primeira Liga was marked by competitive performances and memorable victories. The club's highest finish in the league was 7th place, achieved in the 1990-1991 and 2000-2001 seasons. Salgueiros also made a notable run in the UEFA Cup during the 1991-1992 season, reaching the third round before being eliminated by Cannes.
Despite these successes, Salgueiros faced significant financial difficulties. In the 2001-2002 season, the club was unable to pay its players and staff, leading to a series of strikes and walkouts. The situation culminated in Salgueiros being demoted to the third division and eventually ceasing professional activities in 2004-2005.
In the years that followed, Salgueiros was reformed as Salgueiros 08, starting in the lowest tiers of Portuguese football. Despite the challenges, the club has shown resilience and determination, slowly climbing back up the football pyramid. As of the 2020-2021 season, Salgueiros competes in the Campeonato de Portugal, the third tier of Portuguese football.
Throughout its history, Salgueiros has been known for its commitment to developing young talent. The club's youth academy has produced several players who have gone on to have successful careers in professional football, including Deco, who won the UEFA Champions League with FC Porto and Barcelona, and was named the UEFA Club Footballer of the Year in 2004.
Despite its ups and downs, Salgueiros remains a beloved institution in Portuguese football. The club's passionate fans, known as the "Salgueiristas", continue to support the team through thick and thin, embodying the spirit of resilience and determination that has defined Salgueiros throughout its history.
