Sriwijaya Football Club, commonly known as Sriwijaya FC, is a professional football club based in Palembang, South Sumatra, Indonesia. Established in 2004, the club has grown to become one of the most successful teams in the history of Indonesian football, earning the nickname "Laskar Wong Kito," which translates to "Our Warriors."
Sriwijaya FC's journey began in 2004 when the club was founded by PT Sriwijaya Optimis Mandiri, a company based in Jakarta. The club was initially named Persijatim Solo FC and was based in Solo, Central Java. However, in 2005, the club relocated to Palembang and changed its name to Sriwijaya FC, marking the beginning of a new era.
The club's first significant achievement came in 2007 when they won the Indonesian Premier Division, the top-tier football league in the country. This victory marked the club's entry into the elite circle of Indonesian football. Sriwijaya FC continued to build on this success, winning the Indonesian Super League in 2007-2008 and 2011-2012, and the Indonesian Inter Island Cup in 2010 and 2012.
Sriwijaya FC's success is not limited to domestic competitions. The club has also made its mark in international tournaments. They clinched the AFC Cup, Asia's second most prestigious club competition, in 2010, becoming the third Indonesian club to achieve this feat.
The club's home ground is the Gelora Sriwijaya Stadium, also known as Jakabaring Stadium. With a capacity of over 23,000, the stadium is one of the largest in Indonesia and has hosted several international matches, including the 2007 AFC Asian Cup and the 2011 Southeast Asian Games.
Sriwijaya FC's colors are gold and black, symbolizing the club's ambition to always strive for the highest achievements. The club's emblem, a shield with a sword and five stars, represents the club's philosophy of bravery, fighting spirit, and continuous pursuit of excellence.
Despite facing financial difficulties and relegation in recent years, Sriwijaya FC has remained resilient. The club's management, players, and loyal fan base, known as "Sriwijaya Mania," continue to work towards restoring the club's former glory.
Sriwijaya FC's history is a testament to the club's fighting spirit and determination. From its humble beginnings to its rise as one of Indonesia's top football clubs, Sriwijaya FC has left an indelible mark on Indonesian football. As the club continues to navigate through challenges, it remains committed to its mission of bringing pride and joy to its fans and contributing to the development of Indonesian football.
