West Ham United Football Club, commonly known as West Ham, is a renowned professional football club based in Stratford, East London, England. The club was founded in 1895 as Thames Ironworks and reformed in 1900 as West Ham United. They moved to the Boleyn Ground in 1904, which remained their home ground for more than a century. In 2016, the club relocated to the London Stadium in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
West Ham has a rich history in English football and has competed in the top tier of English football for most of their history. The club has won the FA Cup three times, in 1964, 1975, and 1980, and also captured the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1965. Despite never winning the top-flight league title, they have been runners-up twice in the old First Division.
The club has a reputation for producing talented homegrown players, with their youth development system, known as the Academy of Football, producing a number of international players over the years. Notable alumni include England World Cup-winning captain Bobby Moore, as well as fellow World Cup winners Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters.
West Ham's traditional rivals are other London clubs, with matches against Millwall and Tottenham Hotspur being particularly fierce. The club's fans are known as the 'Hammers', a reference to the club's origins in the Thames Ironworks, and their traditional kit is claret and blue.
The club's highest league position to date came in 1985-86 when they achieved third place in the old First Division. Since the rebranding of the top tier to the Premier League in 1992, their highest finish has been fifth, which they achieved in 1998-99. In recent years, the club has established itself as a regular fixture in the Premier League, with the 2020-21 season seeing them achieve a sixth-place finish and qualification for the UEFA Europa League.
West Ham United is more than just a football club; it is a symbol of pride and identity for its local community in East London. The club's motto, "Fortune's Always Hiding", encapsulates the highs and lows that have come to define its history, while its anthem, "I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles", is one of the most famous in English football. Despite the challenges and changes over the years, the spirit of West Ham United remains unbroken, embodying the resilience and passion of its loyal fan base.
