Academico Viseu Futebol Clube is a professional football club based in Viseu, Portugal. Founded in 1914 as “Club Academico de Football”, it is one of the oldest football clubs in Portugal. The club is commonly known as Academico Viseu and has a rich history in the Portuguese football scene.
Academico Viseu has had its share of ups and downs throughout its history. The club's early years were marked by regional success, but it was not until the 1970s and 1980s that Academico Viseu began to make a name for itself on the national stage. During this period, the club enjoyed a 14-year stint in the Portuguese top division, Primeira Liga.
Despite this success, the club faced financial difficulties in the late 20th century, which led to its dissolution in 2005. However, the passion for football in Viseu was too strong to let the club disappear completely. In the same year, a new club was formed, Academico Viseu FC, which started from the lower divisions and worked its way up the Portuguese football pyramid.
In the 2012-2013 season, Academico Viseu achieved promotion to the LigaPro, the second tier of Portuguese football, where they have remained since. The club's home matches are played at the Estádio do Fontelo, a venue with a capacity of over 8,000 spectators, located in the heart of Viseu.
Academico Viseu's team colors are black and white, and their mascot is a lion, symbolizing the club's strength and determination. The club's motto, "In Victory and Defeat, Academico Forever," reflects the unwavering loyalty of its fans, who are known as the "Black and Whites."
Over the years, Academico Viseu has produced several notable players who have gone on to have successful careers in Portuguese and international football. The club is also known for its youth academy, which has developed many talented young players.
Despite the challenges it has faced, Academico Viseu continues to be a significant presence in Portuguese football. The club's resilience and determination, along with its passionate fan base, ensure that it remains an integral part of the football landscape in Portugal.
