Club de Futebol Os Belenenses, commonly known as Mafra, is a professional football club based in Mafra, Portugal. Founded in 1965, the club has grown to become one of the most respected teams in the Portuguese football league system. Mafra plays its home games at the Estádio Municipal de Mafra, a stadium with a seating capacity of 1,000 spectators.
The club's journey to prominence has been marked by a series of ups and downs. Mafra spent much of its early years in the lower divisions of Portuguese football. However, the club's fortunes began to change in the 2000s when it started to climb the ranks of the Portuguese football league system.
Mafra's first significant achievement came in the 2013-2014 season when it won the Portuguese Third Division, earning promotion to the Segunda Liga, the second tier of Portuguese football. This marked the first time in the club's history that it would compete at such a high level. The team's success continued in the 2018-2019 season when it secured a place in the Primeira Liga, the top tier of Portuguese football, for the first time.
Despite its relatively small size and modest resources, Mafra has managed to compete against some of the biggest clubs in Portugal. The club's philosophy is centered around developing young talent and promoting them to the first team. This approach has not only helped the club to sustain its position in the league but has also allowed it to produce several players who have gone on to represent the Portuguese national team.
Mafra's team colors are green and white, and its emblem features a football and the Mafra National Palace, one of the most iconic landmarks in the region. The club's mascot is a lion, symbolizing strength and courage.
Over the years, Mafra has built a loyal fan base, known as the "Mafrenses". These fans are known for their passionate support, creating an electrifying atmosphere at home games.
Despite the challenges and competition, Mafra continues to hold its own in the world of Portuguese football. The club's journey is a testament to the power of perseverance, ambition, and a strong community spirit. As Mafra looks to the future, it remains committed to its philosophy of nurturing young talent and playing attractive, competitive football.
