Altay Spor Kulübü, commonly known as Altay, is a historic football club based in Izmir, Turkey. Founded on January 16, 1914, the club is one of the oldest in the country. Altay's home ground is the Izmir Atatürk Stadium, a venue with a capacity of over 51,000 spectators. The club's colors are black and white, and their fans are known as "Büyük Altay Taraftarlar Derneği" or "Great Altay Supporters Association."
Altay's early years were marked by success in the Izmir Football League, where they won numerous championships. They were also one of the founding members of the Turkish National Division in 1937, the predecessor of the Turkish Super League. Throughout its history, Altay has competed in the top tier of Turkish football for many seasons, earning a reputation as a respected and formidable team.
Altay's most successful period came in the 1960s and 1970s when they won the Turkish Cup twice, in 1967 and 1980. They also finished as runners-up in the Turkish Super League in the 1985-86 season, their highest league finish to date. The club has also had success in the Balkans Cup, a competition featuring teams from the Balkan states, which they won in 1967.
Despite these successes, Altay has also faced challenges. The club has spent several seasons in the lower divisions of Turkish football, including a period in the TFF Second League, the third tier of Turkish football, following relegation in 2002. However, they have always shown resilience and determination to return to the top flight.
Altay has a strong local fan base and is known for its passionate supporters. The club also has a renowned youth academy, which has produced many players who have gone on to have successful careers in Turkish and international football.
Throughout its history, Altay has been more than just a football club. It has been a symbol of Izmir and a source of pride for its residents. The club's motto, "Altay, the love of the city," reflects this deep connection with the local community.
In recent years, Altay has been working hard to return to its former glory. After a long absence, the club was promoted to the Turkish Super League in the 2021-22 season, marking a new chapter in its history. With a rich past and a promising future, Altay continues to be a significant part of Turkish football.
