About Arbroath

Arbroath Football Club, fondly known as "The Red Lichties", is a professional football club based in Arbroath, Scotland. Founded in 1878, the club holds a distinguished position in Scottish football history. It competes in the Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) and has its home ground at Gayfield Park, which is in close proximity to the North Sea, making it the closest football stadium to a body of water in Europe.

The club's most notable achievement came in 1885 when it recorded the biggest victory in professional football, defeating Bon Accord 36-0 in the Scottish Cup. This record still stands today, making Arbroath a unique part of football's rich history.

Arbroath FC has spent the majority of its existence in the lower tiers of the Scottish football league system. However, the club has had its moments of glory. It has won the Scottish Second Division title on three occasions and has been crowned champions of the Scottish Third Division once. The club has also had a taste of top-tier football, competing in the Scottish Premier Division in the early 1970s.

The Red Lichties have a long-standing rivalry with local team Montrose, with their matches known as the 'Angus Derby'. This rivalry, which dates back to 1887, is one of the oldest in Scottish football and adds an extra layer of excitement to the local football scene.

Arbroath FC's traditional colours are maroon and white, and its club badge features a lighthouse, a reference to the town's maritime history. The club's nickname, "The Red Lichties", is derived from the red light that used to guide fishing boats back to the Arbroath harbour.

Despite its modest size and resources, Arbroath FC has produced several notable players who have gone on to represent Scotland at the international level. These include John Edward 'Ned' Doig, who was part of the Scotland team in the late 19th century, and Steve Campbell, who represented Scotland in the 1990s.

The club is deeply embedded in the local community and has a dedicated fan base. Its supporters are known for their passionate and loyal backing of the team, regardless of its fortunes on the pitch. The club also runs several community initiatives, including youth development programmes and football clinics.

Arbroath FC's journey through the years has been marked by resilience, community spirit, and a deep love for the beautiful game. The club's rich history, coupled with its unique place in football record books, makes it a cherished part of Scotland's football landscape. The Red Lichties continue to inspire their fans and the local community with their dedication and passion for the sport.
