Associazione Sportiva Roma, commonly referred to as AS Roma, is a professional football club based in Rome, Italy. Founded in 1927, the club has a rich history and is one of the most successful football teams in Italy. AS Roma plays its home games at the Stadio Olimpico, a venue it shares with city rivals Lazio.
AS Roma was established as a result of a merger between three clubs - Roman FC, SS Alba-Audace, and Fortitudo-Pro Roma SGS. The primary aim of this merger was to give the city of Rome a strong club to rival dominant northern teams such as Juventus, AC Milan, and Inter Milan. The club's emblem is a she-wolf with twins Romulus and Remus, a mythological symbol of the city of Rome.
Throughout its history, AS Roma has won numerous titles, both domestically and internationally. The club has won the Serie A, Italy's top-flight football league, three times. The first of these victories came in the 1941-42 season, followed by wins in the 1982-83 and 2000-01 seasons. In addition to this, AS Roma has won the Coppa Italia nine times and the Supercoppa Italiana twice.
Internationally, AS Roma has also made its mark. The club reached the final of the European Cup in the 1983-84 season, narrowly losing to Liverpool in a penalty shootout. Despite this loss, the club's run to the final is still remembered as one of the greatest achievements in its history.
AS Roma has been home to many legendary players, including Francesco Totti, who is considered one of the greatest Italian players of all time. Totti spent his entire professional career at AS Roma, from 1992 to 2017, and holds the record for the most goals scored for the club. Other notable players include Daniele De Rossi, another one-club man, and Brazilian forward Paulo Roberto Falcão, who was instrumental in the club's 1983 Serie A victory.
In recent years, AS Roma has remained a competitive force in Italian football, regularly finishing in the top positions of the Serie A and participating in the UEFA Champions League. The club is known for its passionate fan base, the Curva Sud, who are renowned for creating an intense atmosphere at home games.
Off the pitch, AS Roma is also recognized for its commitment to social causes. The club has initiated several campaigns to tackle issues such as racism and social inequality. In 2020, the club won the FIFA Fan Award for its 'Missing Children' initiative, which used transfer announcements to help find missing children around the world.
In conclusion, AS Roma is not just a football club, but a symbol of the city of Rome. With a rich history, a passionate fan base, and a commitment to social causes, AS Roma continues to be a significant player in the world of football.
