Empoli Football Club is a professional football club based in Empoli, Tuscany, Italy. Founded in 1920, the club has a rich history spanning over a century, during which it has experienced numerous ups and downs, including several promotions and relegations.
The club's colours are blue and white, inspired by the city's coat of arms. Empoli FC plays its home matches at the Stadio Carlo Castellani, named after a former player who lost his life during World War II. The stadium, with a capacity of over 16,000, has been the club's home since 1965.
Empoli FC spent much of its early years in the lower tiers of Italian football. The club's fortunes began to change in the 1980s when it achieved promotion to Serie B, the second-highest division in Italy. In the 1985-86 season, Empoli made its debut in Serie A, the top tier of Italian football. Despite being relegated after one season, the club quickly bounced back and enjoyed several more years in Serie A during the late 1980s and early 1990s.
The club faced financial difficulties in the late 1990s, leading to a brief period in Serie C1, the third tier of Italian football. However, Empoli FC managed to recover and returned to Serie A in the 2002-03 season. Since then, the club has continued to oscillate between Serie A and Serie B, demonstrating its resilience and determination.
Empoli FC's most successful period came in the mid-2000s when it qualified for the UEFA Cup, now known as the UEFA Europa League, for the first time in its history. This marked a significant milestone for the club and highlighted its growth and development over the years.
Despite not having a trophy-laden history, Empoli FC has a reputation for nurturing young talent. Many players have used the club as a stepping stone to bigger clubs and international recognition. Notable former players include Antonio Di Natale, Claudio Marchisio, and Elseid Hysaj, all of whom have gone on to have successful careers at the highest level.
Empoli FC has also been home to several notable coaches, including Luciano Spalletti and Maurizio Sarri, who have gone on to achieve success at some of Europe's biggest clubs.
As of the 2021-22 season, Empoli FC competes in Serie A, continuing its tradition of fighting against the odds and proving its worth in one of the world's most competitive football leagues. Despite its modest size and resources, the club remains a beloved institution in Empoli and Tuscany, embodying the passion and spirit of Italian football.
