Atlante FC, officially known as Club de Fútbol Atlante, is a professional football club based in Mexico. The club was founded on April 18, 1916, making it one of the oldest football clubs in Mexico. Atlante FC has a rich history and has contributed significantly to the development of Mexican football.
Atlante FC's roots are in Mexico City, where it was founded by a group of young men who were passionate about football. The club's name, "Atlante," was inspired by the Greek mythological figure Atlas, who was known for his strength and endurance. The club's nickname, "Los Potros de Hierro" (The Iron Colts), reflects this spirit of strength and resilience.
Atlante FC has a long-standing rivalry with other Mexican football clubs, most notably Club America and Cruz Azul. These rivalries have produced some of the most exciting and memorable matches in Mexican football history.
Over the years, Atlante FC has had several notable achievements. The club has won the Mexican Primera División (now known as Liga MX) four times, with their most recent victory coming in the 2007 Apertura tournament. They have also won the CONCACAF Champions League once, in 2009, which qualified them for the FIFA Club World Cup, where they finished in fourth place.
Atlante FC has also been a breeding ground for talented players, many of whom have gone on to represent Mexico at the international level. Notable players who have worn the Atlante FC jersey include Cuauhtémoc Blanco, one of Mexico's greatest ever players, and Rafael Márquez, who has represented Mexico in five World Cups.
In 2007, Atlante FC moved from Mexico City to Cancún, a move that was met with mixed reactions from fans. Despite the move, the club has continued to maintain a strong fan base in both cities.
However, the club has also faced its share of challenges. In 2014, Atlante FC was relegated to the Ascenso MX, the second tier of Mexican football, after finishing last in the relegation table. Despite this setback, the club has remained committed to returning to the top tier of Mexican football.
Atlante FC's colors are blue and garnet, and their home games are played at the Estadio Andrés Quintana Roo in Cancún. Despite the ups and downs, Atlante FC continues to be a beloved and respected institution in Mexican football, known for its rich history, passionate fans, and commitment to developing young talent.
