Correcaminos UAT, officially known as Club de Fútbol Correcaminos de la Universidad Autónoma de Tamaulipas, is a professional football club based in Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas, Mexico. The club was founded on July 27, 1980, and is owned by the Autonomous University of Tamaulipas (UAT). The name "Correcaminos" translates to "Roadrunners" in English, a bird known for its speed and agility, reflecting the team's style of play.
Correcaminos UAT participates in the Ascenso MX, the second tier of the Mexican football league system. The club's home games are played at the Estadio Marte R. Gómez, a stadium with a seating capacity of over 10,000 spectators. The team's colors are orange and blue, and their mascot is a roadrunner, in line with their name.
Throughout its history, Correcaminos UAT has had several notable achievements. The club has won the Ascenso MX championship twice, in 1987 and 1996, and has finished as runners-up on three occasions. Despite these successes, the club has yet to secure a place in the top-tier Liga MX, often falling short in the promotion playoffs.
The club has also participated in the Copa MX, a knockout tournament featuring clubs from the top two tiers of Mexican football. Correcaminos UAT reached the final of the tournament in 2011-12 but was defeated by Santos Laguna.
Correcaminos UAT has a strong local following and is known for its passionate fan base. The club has a fierce rivalry with the Tampico Madero, a club based in the nearby city of Tampico. Matches between the two teams, known as the "Clásico Tamaulipeco," are highly anticipated events and draw large crowds.
The club has also been a launching pad for several players who have gone on to have successful careers in Mexican and international football. These include players like Tomás Boy, who played for the club in the 1980s before going on to manage several top-tier Mexican clubs, and Egidio Arévalo, who played for Correcaminos UAT before representing Uruguay in the FIFA World Cup.
Despite the ups and downs, Correcaminos UAT remains a beloved institution in Ciudad Victoria and Tamaulipas. The club's commitment to fostering local talent and its spirited performances on the pitch have endeared it to fans and made it a significant part of the region's sporting landscape. With its rich history and dedicated fan base, Correcaminos UAT continues to be a vibrant part of Mexican football.
