Association de la Jeunesse Auxerroise, commonly known as Auxerre, is a professional football club based in Auxerre, Burgundy, France. Founded in 1905 by a local priest, Father Ernest Abbé Deschamps, the club started as a youth association before evolving into a full-fledged football club.
Auxerre spent its early years in the amateur divisions, slowly climbing the ranks of French football. The club's fortunes changed dramatically in 1961 when Guy Roux, a former player, was appointed as the manager. Roux, who would go on to serve as the club's manager for an astonishing 44 years, is widely credited with transforming Auxerre from a small provincial team into a force to be reckoned with in French football.
Under Roux's stewardship, Auxerre achieved promotion to Ligue 1, the top tier of French football, in 1980. The club cemented its place in Ligue 1, consistently finishing in the top half of the table and regularly qualifying for European competitions. Auxerre's golden era came in the 1990s when they won the Coupe de France four times and clinched their first and only Ligue 1 title in the 1995-96 season.
Auxerre has a strong tradition of developing young players through its youth academy, which is considered one of the best in France. The academy has produced several top-class players who have gone on to represent France at the international level, including Eric Cantona, Basile Boli, and Djibril Cisse.
In recent years, Auxerre has faced financial difficulties and has struggled to maintain its status in Ligue 1. The club was relegated to Ligue 2 in 2012, ending a 32-year stay in the top flight. Despite these challenges, Auxerre remains committed to its youth development policy and continues to produce talented players.
Auxerre's home games are played at the Stade de l'Abbé-Deschamps, a stadium named after the club's founder and with a capacity of over 18,000 spectators. The club's traditional colors are white and blue, which are featured in its crest and kit.
In conclusion, Auxerre is a club with a rich history and a strong tradition of youth development. Despite its recent struggles, the club remains an important part of French football and continues to contribute to the sport through its commitment to nurturing young talent.
