Everton de Viña del Mar, commonly known as Everton, is a professional football club based in Viña del Mar, Chile. The club was founded on June 24, 1909, by a group of Anglo-Chilean teenagers, making it one of the oldest football clubs in Chile. The club was named after the English Premier League club, Everton, to honour the team's English roots.
Everton's home ground is the Estadio Sausalito, a stadium with a capacity of 23,000 spectators, located in the heart of Viña del Mar. The club's traditional colours are blue and gold, inspired by the maritime landscape of Viña del Mar, with the blue representing the sea and the gold symbolising the city's beaches.
Everton has a rich history in Chilean football, with several national titles to its name. The club has won the Primera División, Chile's top-tier football league, four times, with their first victory coming in 1950. They have also won the Copa Chile, the country's primary football cup competition, once.
Despite these successes, Everton has also experienced periods of struggle. The club has been relegated to the second division several times in its history, but has always managed to fight its way back to the top tier.
Everton is known for its passionate fan base, known as the "Ruleteros", a nickname that comes from Viña del Mar's reputation as a gambling city. The fans are renowned for their unwavering support, regardless of the team's fortunes on the pitch.
The club has a strong youth development program, producing several players who have gone on to represent the Chilean national team. Everton also has a fierce rivalry with Santiago Wanderers, a club based in the neighbouring city of Valparaíso. Matches between the two teams, known as the "Clásico Porteño", are some of the most anticipated fixtures in the Chilean football calendar.
In recent years, Everton has been working to increase its international profile. The club has established partnerships with several foreign clubs, including its namesake, Everton in England. These partnerships aim to share knowledge and resources, improve player development, and create opportunities for friendly matches and player exchanges.
Despite the ups and downs, Everton de Viña del Mar remains a beloved institution in Chilean football. The club's rich history, passionate fan base, and commitment to youth development ensure it continues to play a vital role in the country's football landscape.
