1. FC Heidenheim 1846 is a German football club based in Heidenheim an der Brenz. The team was established in 1846 as a gymnastics and athletics club. However, it was not until 1972 that the football division was created. The club currently competes in the 2. Bundesliga, the second tier of German football, after earning promotion in the 2013-2014 season.
The club's early years were spent in the lower leagues of German football. However, under the guidance of coach Frank Schmidt, who took over in 2007, FC Heidenheim began to climb the ranks. In 2009, they were promoted to the Regionalliga Süd, the fourth tier of German football, and just two years later, they achieved promotion to the 3. Liga, the third tier.
The 2013-2014 season marked a significant milestone in the club's history as they secured promotion to the 2. Bundesliga for the first time. They finished the season as champions of the 3. Liga, earning the right to compete in the second tier of German football. Since then, FC Heidenheim has established itself as a competitive force in the 2. Bundesliga, often finishing in the upper half of the league table.
The team plays its home games at the Voith-Arena, a modern stadium with a capacity of 15,000 spectators. The stadium is known for its passionate and loyal fan base, who are known as the "Voithians". The club's colors are red and blue, and their mascot is a lion named "Paule".
FC Heidenheim has a reputation for developing young talent through its youth academy. Several players have progressed through the club's youth system to play for the first team and even earn international recognition. The club also has a strong community focus, with numerous initiatives aimed at supporting local causes and promoting football in the region.
Despite not having the same historical success or financial resources as some of the bigger clubs in German football, FC Heidenheim has shown that it can compete at a high level. The club's rise through the ranks of German football has been a testament to its strong leadership, dedicated players, and passionate fans. The future looks bright for FC Heidenheim as they continue to build on their success and strive for further progress in the German football hierarchy.
