SV Darmstadt 98, also known as Die Lilien (The Lilies), is a professional football club based in Darmstadt, Germany. The club was founded on May 22, 1898, and has a rich history that spans over a century, marked by periods of success, struggle, and resurgence.
The club's early years were spent in the local leagues, but they began to make their mark in the 1920s and 1930s, reaching the German championship finals in 1934. However, the post-war period was a challenging time for Darmstadt, with the club spending most of its time in the lower tiers of German football.
The 1970s and 1980s were a golden era for Darmstadt 98, with the club enjoying a stint in the Bundesliga, Germany's top-tier league. They first reached the Bundesliga in 1978 but were relegated after just one season. They made a quick return in 1981 and managed to stay in the top flight for two seasons before being relegated again.
The following decades were a rollercoaster ride for Darmstadt, with the club oscillating between the second and third tiers of German football. The club faced severe financial difficulties in the late 1990s and early 2000s, which led to a brief stint in the fourth tier.
However, Darmstadt 98's fortunes changed dramatically in the 2010s. Under the leadership of coach Dirk Schuster, the club achieved back-to-back promotions in 2014 and 2015, returning to the Bundesliga after a 33-year absence. This period is fondly remembered as the "Lilien Miracle."
Despite their underdog status, Darmstadt managed to survive their first season back in the Bundesliga, finishing in 14th place. However, they were relegated the following season and have since been competing in the 2. Bundesliga, the second tier of German football.
Darmstadt 98's home ground is the Merck-Stadion am Böllenfalltor, which has a capacity of around 17,000. The stadium is known for its traditional, English-style design, with standing terraces and close proximity to the pitch.
Throughout its history, Darmstadt 98 has been known for its passionate fan base. The club's supporters are renowned for their loyalty and dedication, sticking with the team through thick and thin. The club's nickname, "Die Lilien" (The Lilies), comes from the fleur-de-lis on the city's coat of arms, which is also featured on the club's logo.
Despite its ups and downs, SV Darmstadt 98 remains a beloved institution in Darmstadt and a respected name in German football. The club's resilience, spirit, and strong community ties make it a unique and cherished part of the country's football landscape.
