FC Politehnica Timisoara is a historic football club based in Timisoara, Romania. Founded in 1921 as Politehnica Timișoara, the club has a rich history and a passionate fan base, despite experiencing several name changes and periods of financial instability.
The club's early years were marked by steady progress, with Politehnica Timisoara establishing itself as a strong contender in the Romanian football scene. The team's first major success came in 1948 when they won the Romanian Cup, a feat they repeated in 1958. The club also enjoyed a successful period in the 1980s, finishing as runners-up in the Romanian Liga I on several occasions.
Politehnica Timisoara's fortunes took a turn for the worse in the 1990s and early 2000s due to financial difficulties. The club was relegated to the second division in 2002, and in 2011, it was dissolved due to insolvency. However, the club's passionate supporters refused to let their team die. They formed a new club, ACS Poli Timișoara, in 2012, which was considered the spiritual successor of the original Politehnica Timisoara.
In 2013, another club, ASU Politehnica Timișoara, was formed by the supporters' association. This club claimed to be the legitimate successor of the original Politehnica Timisoara, and it has since been competing in the Romanian football league system. Despite the controversies and legal battles surrounding the club's identity, the spirit of Politehnica Timisoara lives on in these successor clubs.
Throughout its history, Politehnica Timisoara has been known for its vibrant fan culture. The club's supporters, known as the "Politehnisti", are renowned for their loyalty and passion. They have been a driving force behind the club's survival and resurgence, and their fervor is a testament to the enduring appeal of Politehnica Timisoara.
The club's home ground is the Dan Păltinișanu Stadium, named after a former player and coach who had a significant impact on the club. The stadium, with a capacity of over 32,000, is often filled with the club's ardent supporters, creating an electrifying atmosphere during matches.
Politehnica Timisoara has been a breeding ground for many talented players who have gone on to achieve success in Romanian and international football. Notable alumni include Ion Oblemenco, a prolific striker who represented Romania in the 1970 World Cup, and Nicolae Stanciu, a talented midfielder who currently plays for Slavia Prague and the Romanian national team.
Despite the ups and downs, FC Politehnica Timisoara remains a beloved institution in Romanian football. Its storied history, passionate fan base, and enduring legacy make it a symbol of resilience and dedication in the face of adversity.
