Fernández Vial is a renowned football club based in Concepción, Chile. The club was officially established on June 15, 1903, making it one of the oldest football clubs in the country. Its name pays tribute to Arturo Fernández Vial, a distinguished Chilean railway worker and union leader who was instrumental in the early development of football in Chile.
Fernández Vial's history is marked by a series of ups and downs, reflecting the club's resilient spirit. The team has competed in various divisions of Chilean football, including the Primera División, the highest level of Chilean football, and the Tercera División, the fourth level. Despite these fluctuations, the club has always maintained a strong and loyal fan base, known as "Los Aurinegros" or "The Black and Golds," a reference to the team's distinctive black and gold striped uniforms.
The club's home ground is the Estadio Ester Roa, a stadium with a capacity of over 30,000 spectators located in Concepción. The team's emblem, a steam locomotive, symbolizes the club's historical ties to the railway industry and the working class.
Over the years, Fernández Vial has produced several notable players who have gone on to represent Chile at the international level. The club has also enjoyed success in various tournaments. One of its most significant achievements was winning the Campeonato Regional in 1957, a competition that brought together the best teams from the southern region of Chile.
In 2010, the club faced a major crisis when it was declared bankrupt. However, a group of dedicated fans and former players came together to save the club, demonstrating the deep-rooted passion and commitment that characterizes Fernández Vial. The club was reestablished under the name Club Deportivo Arturo Fernández Vial and has since been working its way back up the ranks of Chilean football.
Despite the challenges, Fernández Vial remains a symbol of pride and tradition in Concepción and beyond. The club's rich history, passionate fan base, and enduring commitment to the sport make it a significant part of Chilean football.
