Founded in 1988, the club is relatively young in comparison to other European football clubs. Despite its youth, Genk has established itself as a formidable force in Belgian football, boasting a rich history of success and a reputation for nurturing young talent.
Genk was formed from the merger of two clubs, Waterschei Thor and KFC Winterslag. The club's inception marked the beginning of a new era in Belgian football, with Genk quickly rising through the ranks to compete in the Belgian First Division A, the country's highest league.
The club's home ground is the Luminus Arena, a state-of-the-art stadium with a seating capacity of over 23,000. The stadium is known for its electric atmosphere, with Genk's passionate fanbase, known as the Genkies, providing unwavering support.
Genk's colours are blue and white, and their emblem features a miner's lamp, a nod to the region's mining history. The club's nickname, "De Smurfen" (The Smurfs), is derived from their blue and white kit.
In terms of achievements, Genk has won the Belgian Pro League four times, with their most recent victory coming in the 2018-2019 season.
