About Grazer AK

Grazer Athletiksport Klub, commonly known as Grazer AK or simply GAK, is a historic football club based in Graz, Austria. Founded in 1902, the club has a rich history and tradition in Austrian football and is known for its passionate fan base.

GAK's early years were marked by regional success, but it was not until the mid-20th century that the club began to make its mark on the national stage. The club's first major success came in 1954 when they won the Austrian Cup. This victory marked the beginning of a golden era for GAK, which saw them become a regular fixture in the Austrian Bundesliga, the country's top-tier football league.

Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, GAK continued to establish itself as one of Austria's leading clubs. They won the Austrian Cup again in 1962, 1972, and 1981, and were runners-up in the league on several occasions. However, despite their domestic success, GAK struggled to make an impact in European competitions.

The turn of the century brought a new era of success for GAK. In the 2000-2001 season, they won the Austrian Cup and reached the final of the Austrian Bundesliga. The following season, they achieved their greatest success to date by winning the Austrian Bundesliga for the first time in their history. This victory qualified them for the UEFA Champions League, where they competed against some of Europe's top clubs.

However, GAK's success was short-lived. In 2007, the club was relegated to the lower leagues due to financial difficulties. Despite these challenges, GAK has remained a popular and well-supported club. They have since worked their way back up through the lower leagues and currently compete in the Austrian Second League.

GAK's home ground is the Merkur Arena, a modern stadium with a capacity of over 15,000. The club's traditional colors are red and white, and their nickname is the "Red Jackets". Over the years, GAK has developed a reputation for producing talented young players, many of whom have gone on to have successful careers in Austria and abroad.

Despite the ups and downs, GAK remains a beloved institution in Graz and a significant part of the city's cultural fabric. The club's history is a testament to the passion and resilience of its players, staff, and fans, and its future looks bright as it continues to rebuild and strive for success on and off the pitch.
