New York City Football Club, commonly known as NYCFC, is a professional soccer club based in New York City. The club was established in 2013 as the 20th team in Major League Soccer (MLS), the premier professional soccer league in the United States and Canada. NYCFC is the first MLS franchise located in the city and the second in the New York metropolitan area, following the New York Red Bulls.
NYCFC is owned by City Football Group (80%), which also owns English Premier League club Manchester City FC and other clubs around the world, and by Yankee Global Enterprises (20%), the owners of the New York Yankees baseball team. The club's inaugural season was in 2015, and they play their home games at Yankee Stadium, one of the world's most famous sports venues.
The club's colors are navy blue, sky blue, and white, reflecting its connection to Manchester City FC. The team's crest, designed by renowned graphic designer Rafael Esquer, features a circular badge in navy blue, with a pentagon in the center inspired by the old New York City Subway Token.
Since its inception, NYCFC has been committed to playing attractive, attacking soccer. The club has attracted high-profile players from around the world, including Spanish World Cup winner David Villa, Italian legend Andrea Pirlo, and English Premier League veteran Frank Lampard. These signings have helped establish NYCFC as a competitive force in MLS.
NYCFC has also shown a commitment to developing homegrown talent. The club has a fully-funded academy system, which provides elite player development and a pathway to professional soccer for the tri-state area's top youth talent. The academy has already produced several players who have gone on to sign professional contracts with the first team.
On the pitch, NYCFC has enjoyed a fair amount of success in a short period. The club has reached the MLS playoffs multiple times and has consistently been among the top teams in the Eastern Conference. Off the pitch, NYCFC has quickly built a passionate fan base. The club's supporters' group, known as The Third Rail, is known for its enthusiastic support and colorful displays at home games.
Despite its relative youth, NYCFC has already made significant strides in establishing itself as a major player in both New York City sports and American soccer. With a strong ownership group, a commitment to attractive soccer, and a growing fan base, the future looks bright for New York City FC.
