Montreal Impact, known officially as Club de Foot Montréal, is a professional football club based in Montreal, Canada. Founded in 1992, the club has a rich history that spans over two decades, and it is recognized as one of the most prominent football clubs in North America.
The club was initially a part of the American Professional Soccer League (APSL), where it made its mark by winning the league championship in its inaugural season. In 1998, Montreal Impact joined the United Soccer Leagues (USL), where it continued to demonstrate its prowess by winning three league championships.
In 2012, the club made a significant leap by joining Major League Soccer (MLS), the top-tier professional football league in the United States and Canada. This move marked a new chapter in the club's history, as it began to compete against some of the best football clubs in North America. Despite the increased competition, Montreal Impact has consistently performed well in the MLS, reaching the playoffs multiple times.
The club has also had success on the international stage. In 2015, Montreal Impact became the first Canadian club to reach the final of the CONCACAF Champions League, a tournament that features the best clubs from North America, Central America, and the Caribbean.
Montreal Impact's home games are played at the Saputo Stadium, a state-of-the-art facility that can accommodate over 20,000 spectators. The stadium is known for its electric atmosphere, particularly during the club's heated rivalry matches against Toronto FC, known as the "401 Derby."
Over the years, Montreal Impact has been home to several notable players, including Didier Drogba, a former Ivory Coast international and Chelsea FC legend, and Ignacio Piatti, the club's all-time leading scorer. The club has also been instrumental in developing local talent, with several players from its academy going on to play professionally.
In 2021, the club underwent a significant rebranding, changing its name to Club de Foot Montréal, or CF Montréal for short. The rebranding included a new logo and team colors, reflecting a desire to forge a stronger connection with the city of Montreal and its diverse culture.
Despite the changes, the club's mission remains the same: to compete at the highest level and bring joy to its passionate fan base. With a history of success and a commitment to excellence, CF Montréal continues to be a force to be reckoned with in North American football.
