PAS Giannina is a professional football club based in Ioannina, the capital city of Epirus, Greece. The club, whose full name is Panepirotikos Athlitikos Syllogos Giannina (Pan-Epirotic Athletic Club of Ioannina), is commonly known as PAS Giannina. It was established on 24th May 1966 as a result of a merger between AO Ioannina and PAS Averof.
The club's emblem, a bull, is a nod to the ancient myth of the king of Epirus, Pyrrhus, who went to consult the oracle of Delphi and was told he would have to sacrifice a bull to achieve successful campaigns. The club's colors, blue and white, are inspired by the Greek flag and the lake Pamvotis, a significant landmark in Ioannina.
PAS Giannina has spent most of its history in the top tier of Greek football, the Super League Greece, where it has established itself as a competitive team. The club's home ground is the Zosimades Stadium, named after the benefactor brothers Zosimades, with a capacity of approximately 7,500 spectators.
Despite never winning the Greek championship, PAS Giannina has had notable successes. The club has twice reached the Greek Cup semi-finals, in the 1971-72 and 2015-16 seasons. In the 2016-17 season, PAS Giannina made its debut in European competitions, participating in the UEFA Europa League, where it reached the third qualifying round.
PAS Giannina has a reputation for its youth development, having produced several players who went on to represent the Greek national team. The club's commitment to nurturing talent is evident in its well-structured youth academy, which is considered one of the best in the country.
Over the years, the club has cultivated a passionate fan base. The supporters, known as "The Hooligans", are renowned for their fervent backing of the team, creating an electrifying atmosphere at home games.
PAS Giannina, while not the most decorated club in Greek football, has a rich history and a strong identity rooted in the city of Ioannina and the region of Epirus. The club's resilience, commitment to youth development, and the unwavering support of its fans make it a significant player in Greek football.
