Deportes Quindío is a professional Colombian football club based in Armenia, Quindío, that currently competes in the Categoría Primera B, the second tier of Colombian football. The club was founded on January 8, 1951, making it one of the oldest football clubs in the country.
The club's history is marked by a series of ups and downs, with periods of success interspersed with struggles. Despite these challenges, Deportes Quindío has managed to carve out a place for itself in Colombian football history. The club's nickname, "Los Cuyabros," is a nod to the indigenous people of the region, the Quimbaya, who were known as the "Cuyabra" people.
Deportes Quindío's most successful period came in the 1950s and 1960s when they won the Colombian professional football championship in 1956. This was followed by a second-place finish in 1962. The club also reached the finals of the Copa Colombia in 1982 and 2003 but fell short of the title on both occasions.
The club's home ground is the Estadio Centenario, which has a seating capacity of 20,000. The stadium is known for its vibrant atmosphere, with the club's passionate fans, known as the "La Barra del Indio," providing unwavering support.
Over the years, Deportes Quindío has been a breeding ground for talented players who have gone on to make their mark in Colombian and international football. Notable players who have donned the Deportes Quindío jersey include Faustino Asprilla, who later starred for Parma in Italy and Newcastle United in England, and Duván Zapata, who has had successful stints with clubs in Italy's Serie A.
Despite its rich history, Deportes Quindío has faced challenges in recent years, including financial difficulties and relegation to the second division. However, the club has shown resilience in the face of adversity, and its commitment to developing young talent and playing attractive football has earned it a loyal fan base.
Today, Deportes Quindío continues to be a symbol of pride for the people of Armenia and Quindío. The club's mission is not only to achieve success on the pitch but also to contribute to the social and cultural development of the region. Despite the challenges, Deportes Quindío remains committed to its roots, embodying the spirit of the Cuyabra people and serving as a beacon of hope for the future of Colombian football.
